01 — About the Climb
Oceania's
Highest Wall
Climbing Carstensz Pyramid — Oceania's highest summit at 16,024 feet (4,884 meters) — demands real command of rock and single rope technique (SRT). Climbers should be comfortable on routes rated up to 5.8/5a, and physically ready well beyond a casual level of fitness.
Cardiovascular fitness on its own is not enough. Many climbers who can run marathons still struggle to reach the summit — the mountain rewards thorough preparation across technical skill, endurance, and mental composure, not endurance alone.
The final push covers roughly 2 kilometers with more than 600 meters of elevation gain, typically taking 6–10 hours to the summit and back to camp — short in distance, but unforgiving in exposure.
To reach base camp, climbers fly by helicopter from Timika (sea level) directly to Yellow Valley at approximately 4,200 meters — a drastic jump in altitude. Prior acclimatisation on another mountain is strongly advised; ask us for recommendations suited to your location.
